Neurological Services

IHCM’s providers of neurological rehabilitation and specialist neurological care support adults living with acquired brain injury (ABI), traumatic brain injury (TBI), progressive neurological conditions and other complex neurological disorders that require specialist rehabilitation, nursing care or long-term support.

Many of the people we support have a combination of physical, cognitive, behavioural and communication needs requiring coordinated multidisciplinary input. Depending on the provider and individual circumstances, support may be delivered within specialist rehabilitation hospitals, residential care with nursing or dedicated neurological care environments, ensuring people receive the most appropriate level of care at every stage of their recovery or longer-term journey.

Treatment and rehabilitation programmes are personalised to each individual and vary according to their diagnosis, goals, abilities and stage of recovery. IHCM’s providers deliver care through experienced multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) who work together to maximise independence, improve function and enhance quality of life.

Depending on individual need, rehabilitation may include consultant-led medical care, specialist nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, neuropsychology, psychology, dietetics, rehabilitation assistants and therapeutic recreation. Programmes focus on improving mobility, communication, cognition, daily living skills, emotional wellbeing and participation in meaningful activities while supporting individuals to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Yes. Families and carers play a vital role in neurological rehabilitation and are recognised as important partners in the recovery journey. They often know the individual better than anyone else, providing valuable insight into their personality, communication style, routines, interests, abilities and aspirations before their injury or illness. This understanding helps our multidisciplinary teams develop rehabilitation programmes that are truly person-centred and focused on what matters most to the individual.

Across IHCM’s network of providers, families and carers are encouraged to be involved in care planning, goal setting and regular review meetings wherever appropriate and with the individual’s consent. Each provider develops its own relationships with families through regular communication, family meetings, newsletters, forums and other opportunities to remain engaged throughout the rehabilitation journey.

We recognise that neurological injury or illness affects the whole family, not just the individual. By working in partnership with families, we can better support recovery, celebrate progress, plan for the future and help ensure successful transitions back into the community or to the next stage of care. We also welcome feedback from families, recognising that their experiences help us continually improve the care and support provided across our services.

Not necessarily. The length of rehabilitation or placement depends on the individual’s diagnosis, rehabilitation goals and ongoing support needs. Some people receive specialist neurological rehabilitation before returning home with community-based support, while others may progress to one of IHCM’s providers of residential care with nursing or another appropriate long-term care setting.

Several of IHCM’s neurological providers offer different environments within the same service, enabling people to move between more intensive rehabilitation and longer-term specialist care as their needs change. This flexible approach supports continuity of care, reduces unnecessary transitions and ensures individuals continue to receive the right level of rehabilitation, nursing care or support throughout their recovery journey.

Every referral is individually reviewed by the receiving provider’s multidisciplinary clinical team to ensure the service can safely meet the person’s rehabilitation, nursing, medical and support needs. The assessment considers the individual’s diagnosis, current level of functioning, physical health, cognitive and communication needs, behavioural presentation, rehabilitation potential and any identified risks.

IHCM’s central referrals team works closely with NHS commissioners, Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), local authorities, hospital discharge teams and other healthcare professionals to identify the most appropriate provider and pathway. Our aim is to ensure every individual receives the right care, in the right environment, at the right stage of their rehabilitation or long-term neurological journey.
